Myra Dubois is a drag superstar – there’s no denying it. For what is considered ‘old-school’ drag comedy, the parody songstress has managed to remain one of the nation’s most relevant drag acts, gaining new fans everywhere she goes. Recently touring with international drag comedienne Bianca Del Rio hasn’t hurt either.
Her irreverent jokes and her jesting jabs have you laughing constantly. Whether it’s in joy or shock is another story – but that’s exactly what drag is about! Dubois is a great example of British drag – clever, cutting and camp! And what could be more camp than a Christmas show in May?
‘We Wish You A Myra Christmas’ brings us all together for a traditional family Christmas – singing carols, festive anecdotes, Quality Street, sharp insults and a present or two as well! The show includes a few pre-organised bits such as finding the biggest Grinch in the audience and a crowd-influenced ’12 Days of Christmas’ singalong but the majority of Dubois show is simply her interacting with her audience and the Christmas setting just happens to be the chosen backdrop. If it wasn’t for Dubois’ wit and charisma, the one hour show could find itself significantly shorter.
Dubois’ festive theme for the show is more of a way for her to interact with her audience rather than it being the reason for watching. ‘We Wish You A Myra Christmas’ has been a staple drag comedy show for Edinburgh Fringe, toured nationally and revived in other non-holiday time frames – so don’t worry about the oddness of wearing your Santa Hat in summer. Is it the best Christmas show on offer? No. In May? Yes.
